George Thomson has been a member of Falkirk Company of Archers for over 25 years and he is still only in his early forties!
George joined the club as a junior and has stayed with the club over the years taking on a variety of tasks on the committee - he is currently the club President / Coaching Organiser for at least the second time around!
In March each year Falkirk Council, through the local Sports Council, makes awards to local residents who have excelled, during the previous year, in either the arts or in sport. The Falkirk Company of Archers committee wanted to recognise George for his support and commitment to the club and were eager to nominate him for the ‘Service to Sport Award’. George was up against a very strong field of dedicated people and was delighted to be one of the three finalists for 2006.
George attended a dinner where he was presented with a Scroll Award in recognition of his finalist place. Unfortunately he did not win the award but the Falkirk club is very proud of his achievement and that archery was also recognised. |

Scottish TV Star Lorraine Kelly was bang on target when she tried archery at a fundraising event for Strathcarron Hospice, near Falkirk.
Falkirk Company of Archers was asked to host an archery competition as part of an Inter Services tournament at Tulliallan Police College recently. The event saw teams from the Army, Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service and Air Force battling it out in a variety of sports including archery. Each services team had to raise as much money as possible for the hospice and put their reputation on the line to win a coveted trophy donated by Strathcarron hospice.
Lorraine Kelly opened the event and arrived at the archery site wanting to take part and have a shot. Club coach George Thomson gave her a helping hand to try our sport and he said ”she was really keen to have a go and was a natural hitting the target with all her arrows”.
The day was a great success with lots of money being raised for this worthwhile cause. It is hoped that the event will run again next year and, having made such a hit with Strathcarron hospice, Falkirk Company of Archers has been asked to organise the archery event next year.
